Is there still money for a heat pump?

The federal tax credit ended for anything installed after 31 December 2025. State rebates replaced it — worth up to $16,000 — but only some states are handing the money out yet, and most of what you can read about it went out of date the month it was published.

Fixing an old air conditioner is getting more expensive

Air conditioners sold since 2025 use a different refrigerant from the one in most systems already in people's houses. The older type is being phased out, so topping up an existing unit costs more every year — which quietly changes whether an expensive repair on a fifteen-year-old system is worth doing at all, or whether you are better off putting the money toward a replacement.

We are building the calculator that answers that properly, for winter 2026–27. Until it exists, the useful thing to know is this: when you get a repair quote for an older system, ask what the refrigerant costs separately from the labour. That line is the one that has moved, and it is the one that decides the answer.
